The concept of politically correct speech is a construct of the Left, but it is something that the vast majority of Americans absolutely loathe, according to a new study.
Academics Stephen Hawkins, Daniel Yudkin, Miriam Juan-Torres, and Tim Dixon argue in their paper, “Hidden Tribes: A Study of America’s Polarized Landscape,” that despite what we see on social media and on the cable news channels, most Americans don’t fit neatly into what many view as typical Left-Right categories, The Atlantic reports.
Not only that, but the researchers also found that most Americans share much more common ideals than it would seem on social media.
The most common concerns among those involved in the study were that, because of PC ‘rules,’ people are far less able to express themselves as they want to, but feel they have to be careful, as they’re ‘required’ to. The survey did not specifically define political correctness, however, so there wasn’t any agreement on a certain definition.
That said, as to Americans’ aversion to PC, The Atlantic reported:
According to the report, 25 percent of Americans are traditional or devoted conservatives, and their views are far outside the American mainstream. Some 8 percent of Americans are progressive activists, and their views are even less typical. By contrast, the two-thirds of Americans who don’t belong to either extreme constitute an “exhausted majority.” Their members “share a sense of fatigue with our polarized national conversation, a willingness to be flexible in their political viewpoints, and a lack of voice in the national conversation.”
The academics note specifically that most of the “exhausted majority” — and more — are no fans of political correctness. In fact, among the American people, a whopping 80 percent believe that “political correctness is a problem in our country.”
What’s more, even younger Americans who you might think are well schooled in PC thought (as in, propagandized) are not supportive of it, either. Of Americans 24-29, nearly three-quarters – 74 percent – don’t like political correctness, while that figure rises to 79 percent for those under 24.
“On this particular issue,” The Atlantic notes, “the woke are in a clear minority across all ages.” (Related: Army BLOWING UP Obama’s PC culture; getting back to what it’s for: BREAKING things and killing enemies.)
In terms of demographics, Native Americans (88 percent) believe PC is a problem; Hispanics are right behind them (87 percent), followed by Asians (82 percent) and then whites (79 percent).
Noted one Native American who commented in his focus group: “It seems like every day you wake up something has changed … Do you say Jew? Or Jewish? Is it a black guy? African-American? … You are on your toes because you never know what to say. So political correctness in that sense is scary.”
Conservatives are the biggest opponents of PC; 97 percent believe it’s grown into a massive problem in our country. For liberals, the number is far less but still significant – 61 percent.
But only 30 percent of self-avowed progressives don’t like political correctness, but interestingly, those who do are disproportionally white and rich. Go figure.
“…[P]rogressive activists are much more likely to be rich, highly-educated – and white,” the study says. More than twice as likely as the average American to make more than $100,000 a year, they are also three times more likely to have a postgraduate degree.
“With the exception of the small tribe of devoted conservatives, progressive activists are the most racially homogenous group in the country,” the study found.
So what does this study really represent? It means that a country full of perpetually angry social justice warriors (SJWs) is not the future of America but rather they are dwindling in numbers, and quickly. At some point, they’re going to die out altogether.
It’s about time. PC – like the progressives who espouse (and demand) it – are a bane on American society. And they are not supported by most of us.
