A 2023 survey reveals that a total of 137 abortion clinics have been shut down in the United States following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Conducted by Operation Rescue, a prominent pro-life organization, the annual survey found that 49 abortion clinics shut down in 2023 while another 88 were shut down in 2022 following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision.
A small number of additional closures that occurred after the publication of the survey in November 2023 were not recorded and will instead be reflected in the organization’s 2024 report.
According to the report, the Dobbs ruling contributed significantly to the shutdown of dozens of abortion clinics. The ruling removed federal protections for abortion and allowed states to decide abortion policies for themselves, leading to direct abortion bans for the first time in nearly half a century. The net decrease in abortion centers for 2023 was 13, considering the closures and openings. Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said there has been a 69 percent decrease in abortion clinics since 1991. Back then, there were 2,176 abortion clinics operating in the United States. Now, only 670 abortion clinics are still operating.
Newman also noted that the industry has been quick to adapt to abortion restrictions. Fifty-three abortion centers have either newly opened or resumed operations last year. Additionally, 79 percent of these newly established abortion facilities exclusively offer abortion-inducing drugs and do not provide surgical abortions, representing a trend in the abortion industry wherein abortion clinics are reorienting to providing more mail-order abortions by providing abortion pills to circumvent restrictions.
Abortion allies have pursued various other tactics to sustain the industry. These include attempts to enshrine abortion rights in state constitutions, lobbying for more legal protections for abortions and providing financial support for interstate abortion expenses such as travel. These groups are also funding the construction of new abortion facilities near state borders and the establishment of liberal states as sanctuaries for those seeking to evade pro-life laws.
Newman stated that it is important for pro-life organizations to highlight the corruption of the abortion industry and its dangerous practices, and vowed to continue Operation Rescue’s campaign until every abortion clinic in the U.S. is shut down.
“We will not relent until every abortion mill is piled up on the ash heap of history. Not only do we strive to keep the public informed of the corrupt abortion industry’s dark, horrid underbelly, but we work closely with boots-on-the-ground pro-lifers across the country to save [the] lives of innocent babies by nailing shut the doors of these wretched killing centers for good,” Newman said.
Abortion has effectively been abolished across a vast swath of America, spanning 2,000 miles from the Texas border to West Virginia. A block of 10 states, primarily in the South but also including states like the Dakotas and Idaho, have successfully implemented near-total bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy, with limited exceptions.
Fourteen states currently have laws that ban all or most abortions, and available data suggests that these pro-life laws could potentially eliminate an estimated 200,000 abortions annually.
These 14 states, which accounted for approximately 110,000 abortions per year before the overturning of Roe v. Wade, have witnessed a drastic reduction in abortion numbers. Abortion rates have plummeted to below 10 per month since the reversal, leading to the closure of numerous abortion facilities and a shift in the reproductive landscape.
Birth data reflects the efficacy of these pro-life measures, with Texas experiencing a notable 4.7 percent increase in births last year. Reports also indicate that women in states with abortion bans are increasingly choosing life, often with the support of pro-life pregnancy centers.
The Roe v. Wade overturn has not only led to a decline in abortion numbers but has also paved the way for the enforcement of various pro-life protections, including parental consent measures, dismemberment abortion bans, fetal burial laws and protections for babies with Down syndrome.
