A new study conducted by doctors from Columbia University in New York and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles has revealed that transgender surgery rates tripled from 2016 to 2019 across all age groups, while thousands of genital mutilations in minors were performed over the same period.
The study, published online by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), used a database of major ambulatory surgical procedures in nearly 2,800 hospital-owned facilities across the U.S. diagnosed with gender identity disorder, transsexualism and personal history of sex reassignment.
Over this period, 3,678 minors, some as young as 12 years old, underwent genital mutilations. Based on the data, nearly 57 percent underwent breast creation or breast amputation, while around 35 percent had genital reconstruction. Of all these two procedures, breast creation or amputation increased dramatically among minors by more than fivefold.
“Most patients first experience gender dysphoria at a young age,” the authors wrote. This explains a lot about the surge in genital mutilations for minors during those periods.
On average, women live with gender dysphoria for approximately 23 years before undergoing sex-change surgery. Meanwhile, men endure an average of 27 years with the condition before pursuing surgery.
The study highlighted the growing number of detransitioners. These detransitioners share stories of surgeries that did not produce the expected results and speak of irreversible, painful and sometimes life-threatening health problems stemming from their attempts at sex change through medication and surgery.
In response to the alarming and increasing number of minors being brainwashed into genital mutilation and believing in the idea of “wrong gender,” more and more Republican-controlled states are banning child sex-change surgery.
As of now, 22 states have already enacted laws against genital mutilations, according to data from the Equality Federation, an advocacy organization collaborating with LGBTQ+ groups at the state level. Now that more and more conservative states ban gender-affirming care for minors, doctors can anticipate a boom in sex-change surgeries in democratic states.
Arkansas, which became the first state to ban these procedures in 2021, holds healthcare providers liable for legal action if they perform gender transition procedures on minors.
On April 4, Idaho joined the list of states prohibiting such medical surgeries when Governor Brad Little signed a similar bill into law. Just before that, Kentucky Republicans successfully overrode a veto by Democratic Governor Andy Beshear to pass their own bill.
Other states such as Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah and West Virginia have also implemented laws that restrict various forms of genital mutilation for minors, each with its own specific provisions and consequences.
Furthermore, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas signed a bill in June to ban gender alterations for minors, which is set to take effect this month. Looking ahead, states like South Carolina are actively considering legislation to limit gender transition procedures for individuals under the age of 26.
