The failing New York Times (NYT) is doubling down on its decision to hire an outspoken racist who hates white people to its editorial board – claiming that the infamous Sarah Jeong, a disgruntled, anti-white Asian woman, is perfectly justified in hating all white people because she’s been harassed on social media in the past.
All of the grotesque statements that Jeong has made on Twitter over the years, including that “White men are bull****,” apparently align with the core values of the NYT, which only has glowing things to say about her in response to the controversy. Jeong “has guided readers through the digital world with verve and erudition,” the NYT claims, “staying ahead of every turn on the vast beat that is the internet.”
“Her journalism and the fact that she is a young Asian woman have made her a subject of frequent online harassment,” the NYT says, defending Jeong as some kind of victim in all of this. “For a period of time she responded to that harassment by imitating the rhetoric of her harassers. She sees now that this approach only served to feed the vitriol that we too often see on social media.”
Keep in mind that Jeong isn’t exactly an honest journalist, either, despite what the NYT insists. When Jackie Coakley, a student at The University of Virginia, was caught a few years back lying about having been raped by fraternity members at her school, Jeong was there to defend not the young men that Coakley had falsely accused of this heinous crime, but Coakley the liar.
“The more I see these ‘inconsistencies’ and ‘discrepancies’ touted as evidence of falsehood, the more convinced I am that Jackie is not lying,” Jeong wrote at the time, basically admitting that she couldn’t care less about actual evidence and proof when it conflicts with her preconceived notions about “evil white men” being rapists.
.
To demonstrate the age-old double standard on the issue of racism, conservative commentator Candace Owens decided to tweet the very same things that Jeong did, and that the NYT defended, except that she replaced all references to “white” with “black” and “Jewish.” Her account was immediately suspended by Twitter, only to later be reinstated after the social media giant received backlash for its hypocrisy.
“Jewish people are bull**** … like dogs pissing on fire hydrants,” Owens tweeted, followed by the hashtag, “#cancelJewishpeople.” She added in the same tweet, “Are Jewish people genetically disposed to burn faster in the sun?”
The only thing that differentiates this tweet from Jeong’s is that it targets Jewish people instead of white people. Owens even added a disclaimer at the bottom of the tweet explaining that it was simply a reposting of Jeong’s earlier tweet, with the target being Jewish people instead of white people. But it still got her account suspended for 12 hours because it apparently violated Twitter’s rules and guidelines for users.
After receiving a torrent of backlash, Twitter later tried to cover its tracks, claiming that the removal of Owens’ account for this tweet was an “error.”
“The thing is, I wouldn’t have minded if I was locked out, because I actually agree with Twitter that that language is inappropriate,” Owens stated in a follow-up to her experiment.
“My point in tweeting that and replacing the word with black and Jewish yesterday was to show how different that mentality is when you see it in that context and you see talking about Jewish people and predisposed to burning under the sun or black people saying they should live underground. It’s horrifically racist, but somehow we’ve gotten to a point in society where it’s OK to say the exact same thing about white people, and that’s problematic.”
