A Finnish psychiatrist has warned the public that the increasing trend of transgenderism among young people “has gotten out of hand.”
According to Riittakerttu Kaltialia, a chief psychiatrist in the Department of Adolescent Psychiatry at Tampere University Hospital, an influential 2011 study conducted by Dutch clinicians contributed to the widespread acceptance of transgender ideology.
The study suggests that gender-confused children, mostly boys, who used puberty blockers showed positive outcomes. As a result, the study became a global “gold standard” in the field. The psychiatrist also mentioned the rise of an “activist movement” promoting mutilation as a “human right.”
These may have influenced the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health in Finland to seek the establishment of a national pediatric gender program for two hospitals already providing gender identity services for adults.
“Medical organizations are supposed to transcend politics in favor of upholding standards that protect patients,” Kaltiala said. “When medical professionals start saying they have one answer that applies everywhere, or that they have a cure for all of life’s pains, that should be a warning to us all that something has gone very wrong.” (Related: Experts question long-term effects of breast mutilation surgery on quality of life of transgender youth.)
As a response to this growing and disturbing trend, Kaltiala penned a letter published by the Free Press in which she discussed how most teenagers with gender dysphoria were frequently influenced by online content, peer pressure or advice from LGBT groups. She also examined the adverse effects of hormonal and surgical treatments on teenagers.
In 2015, Kaltiala and her colleagues initiated a request to the Council for Choices in Health Care (COHERE), a prominent medical and psychiatric association in Finland, to create national guidelines for the treatment of gender dysphoria in minors. The request was later renewed in 2018 and eventually accepted, leading to the release of its findings in 2020.
COHERE provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for the treatment of gender dysphoria in minors. The recommendations include the importance of providing appropriate psychosocial support; consulting with child and youth psychiatrists; and carefully considering treatment options on a case-by-case basis after careful assessment and diagnostic examinations.
Moreover, the recommendations stressed that surgical treatments are not part of the treatment methods for dysphoria in minors. Instead, the initiation and monitoring of hormonal treatments are centralized at specialized research clinics on gender identity.
However, Kaltiala pointed out that the battle is far from over, especially in the United States.
Doctors in the U.S. believe that minors already understand their gender. Even the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) supports the idea of gender mutilation. Additionally, American doctors exaggerate the fact that gender-confused minors are at risk of suicide to push their “gender medicalization” agenda.
Ultimately, Kaltiala condemned gender mutilation as “dishonest and extremely unethical.”
